Round 17 saw The Lions host its nearest neighbour Box Hill United, it was an opportunity for both teams to put some distance between them and the bottom two. Coach Jimmy Williams was again forced to make a change to his starting 11 with the departure overseas of Will Ellis but in Daniel Rodgrigues he had a more than capable replacement.
The home team settled first but we’re shocked when a long ball clearance created indecision in The Lions defence for Todd Dekker to score in the 19th minute. Further chances fell to both teams but half time arrived with Box Hill holding a 1-0 lead.
10 minutes into the second half Eastern Lions equalised through the brilliance of Philip Ajao who put Ryan Losty through on the right, Losty picked out the advancing Kostas Droutsas who’s shot left Box Hill keeper Keegan Coulter with no chance.
As the game rolled into its final 10 minutes it took a sharp turn when Box Hill caught The Lions defence on the break for Ryan Go to thump the ball past the despairing hands of Chris van Corler. With just minutes to go it was looking like The Hillmen were going to take the 3 points. What they hadn’t allowed for was the Lions fighting spirit. With 94 minutes on the clock a Ziggy Razuki cross was met by Ryan Losty to tie up the match with the final kick of the game. In the end a 2-2 result gave both teams a point enabling them to move further away from the bottom two.
Next week the Lions are at home again hosting Archie Thompson’s Murray United.
